How to Say the Year 2012

Think you know how to say the year ‘2012’. Think again! Take our little test.

First, say out loud the year 1942.

You probably said nineteen forty-two, which is correct.

Now say out loud the year 1910.

You probably said nineteen ten, which is also correct.

Now say out loud the year 2012.

You probably said two thousand and twelve. Why did you say that?

People should be saying twenty twelve for the year 2012. Why? Because spoken english is not as formal as written english. For written english it would be appropriate to say two thousand and twelve. Spoken english, however is less formal, so saying twenty twelve is perfectly fine.

Pass it on.
